24 Hours Lemons Shine Country Classic Barber Motorsports 2018

Down and dirty look at the 24 Hours of Lemons Fifth Annual ’Shine Country Classic at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama. Some of the usual suspects brought their re-bodied, Frankenstein-engine-swapped $500 beaters back to one of the nicest tracks in the U.S. for the endurance race
I’m sure the track staff is still wiping the oil from the track and de-Lemoning the pit areas from the abuse the miscreants in fire suits doled out. From the Pinto to the Porsches, most were Junkyard Life worthy. Most of these race cars have been saved from the crusher or their status as parts cars, and regained life by adding sturdy roll bars and safety equipment along with hundreds of hours of labor creating goofy, fun, themed rides. Fighting bad steering, worn tires, ill-fitting parts, hangovers, and oh yeah, hundreds of miles of track time over two days and two track sessions. Winners in A, B, and C classes were awarded and many other “prizes” and derision by judges.
My favorites, a 1972 Datsun 240Z, and a 1983 Cadillac Coupe SeVille that saw Motor Trend’s Randy Pobst behind the wheel. Pobst hopped in a few other rides and blistered the field. He was great and fun to talk to in the pits.
“I love junkyards,” said Pobst.
I know he loves racing, judging by the number of laps/hours he spent on the track.
